About this Course

This 12-lesson course is an exploration of the various subjects of Sustainable Development. It has been designed for a group setting, and is perfect for students interested in studying the Climate Action and Sustainable Development Senior Cycle module.

Participants will learn about the Sustainable Development Goals and some of the issues facing the world today, including climate justice, biodiversity loss and waste, and modern issues like eco-anxiety and technology. They will learn how to effectively communicate sustainable development, and explore their values to see what global development issues matter to them and how to make a difference in our world.

Why do this course?

This course is an excellent introduction to Sustainable Development, serving as a useful precursor to the Climate Action and Sustainable Development Senior Cycle module. Each lesson is designed to fit in a 40-minute class.

We believe young people play a crucial role in combatting today’s global issues like climate change and biodiversity loss, because of their innovation and passion to bring about change for the better. Learning about the various aspects of sustainable development can help young people identify what they value most and how they can bring about change in their own lives, their communities and our world. A better understanding of sustainable development can help young people to choose an issue that matters to them and to take action.

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Understand what sustainable development is and be able to discuss some global development issues.
  • Be able to engage in self-reflection and identify their values.
  • Have developed their confidence in teamwork, critical thinking and communicating sustainable development.
  • Have gained the tools needed to take action and bring about change for our world.

A note to teachers

This course is a wonderful opportunity to enhance student interaction within the class, strengthening teamwork skills, building students’ confidence to engage in discussions with classmates, as well as learning how to become peer educators! With each lesson designed to fit in a 1-hour class, this course is particularly suited to Transition Year students who want to build their knowledge of environmental and social issues and solutions, develop skills for creating change and boost student interaction, and students interested in the Climate Action and Sustainable Development Senior Cycle module.

We have integrated group activities that encourage students to engage in group work, to question and think critically, and to discuss the various topics covered. Where relevant, any materials needed will be outlined in the “Materials” tab at the start of each lesson. Furthermore, we will provide prompts along the way to help teachers facilitate group work. You will have access to the course for 120 days; your course expiry date will be shown at the top of this page.
